U.S.O. Tours

Jack Benny, Anna Lee, Wini Shaw and Larry Adler

In 1943, Adler told the manager of the Palmer House in Chicago, where he was contracted for a ten-week show, that he had been drafted by the Army to do a tour and he would have to break his contract. Adler was not completely truthful with the manager, however. He was going to do a tour for the Army, but he had not been drafted. Abe Lastfogle, head of the United Service Organization (USO) and Adler’s manager, had approached Adler with the opportunity to tour with Jack Benny, Wini Shaw, and the English actress Anna Lee. They performed for troops throughout Africa and the Middle East.
